Surrounded by thousands of snowdrops and aconites Spring is definitely around the corner albeit we used to get heavy falls of snow at this time of year which reminded me when 32 years ago I travelled to West London Kensington Fair in awful conditions with many weather warnings of heavy snow due that night. My van and my car were unloaded and my stand was set up. I treated myself to a night’s stay at a little hotel in a garden square in Knightsbridge before staying the rest of the week with friends. When I awoke the next morning I couldn’t understand why London was so eerily quiet. I opened the curtains and could see absolutely nothing as the whole balcony was full of snow. I got dressed and went downstairs to find a very panicked hotel owner who declared she could not cook and none of her staff could get to work! So guess who cooked the 14 residents their breakfast?!! At least I was given free board for the night’s stay. When I ventured outside, my car was completely covered in snow and there were abandoned vehicles everywhere, so I set off on foot to Kensington.
I always take too much furniture to a show but on this occasion it was fortuitous as so many dealers were unable to get to the fair so I spread out across 6 stands. The fair opened on the Thursday with very few dealer stands and thanks to the fair organiser, Caroline Penman, who put out radio broadcasts telling locals the fair was still on, we had a fairly healthy queue with people who lived in the adjoining streets to the fair.
I even managed to sell a huge Sheraton sideboard on the understanding it could be delivered to a house in Camden Hill Road that afternoon as the owner was entertaining that night!! The only way to get this done was to go and buy snow boots for the very helpful security men who carried it up the steep, icy road and into the buyer’s house during their break!! Resourceful to the end.
By the next day the snow had been cleared, roads opened and stalwart dealers from around the country set up their stands and had a successful final weekend. Those fairs in Kensington were just the best.
We have exhibited at Kensington during the hottest summer ever, the worst winter and always had a brilliant fair.
